TE Connectivity (TE), a global leader in connectivity and sensor solutions, today announced its new MCON 8 receptacle crimp contact for power and signal transmission in vehicles. The new product is designed to handle currents up to 80 amps and supports the growing trend of electrification, making vehicles smarter, greener and more connected.
TE’s MCON 8 contact is compatible with the AK (German OEM work group) standardized contact cavity for connectors. The new product is specifically designed for the harsh automotive environment, including for temperature and vibration resistance, and has excellent electrical and mechanical integrity.
“The design and material concept of our MCON 8 contact system allows the transmission of medium-level currents at high temperatures with a consistently low contact resistance,” said Thorsten Eisele, product manager for EMEA, Automotive, TE. “A new silver plating with a low contact resistance has extended the limiting temperature to as high as 180 degrees Celsius without the delamination effects that often occur when using standard silver-plating types at higher temperatures.”
The MCON 8 has 12 contact springs and two contact levels, making it extremely reliable and resistant to vibration. The contact design prevents tilting movement around the transverse axis of the tab contact in the receptacle. At the same time, the MCON 8 contact system is easy to operate because the necessary insertion forces are comparatively low, while the design offers reliable protection against overstretching of the contact springs.
The MCON 8 is designed for two different tab contact thicknesses, 8.0/9.5 mm x 0.8 mm and 8.0/9.5 mm x 1.2 mm, in accordance with AK standard 114-94201. The product is available sealed or unsealed. The unsealed option includes a cable cross-section of up to 16 mm², while the offering with single wire seal can be used with cable cross-sections of up to 10 mm².
The MCON family of contacts also includes the MCON 0.5, MCON 1.2, MCON 2.8, and MCON 6.3.
TE technologies connect nearly every electronic function in the car – from cloud-connected services and alternative power systems to infotainment. The company is working with industry leaders and notable organizations to develop global industry standards and requirements for in-car networking technology.
