Artificial intelligence (or AI as it is commonly referred to) is as the name implies, the ability of a computer system to perform complex tasks that traditionally required human brainpower.  Many of us are using AI in our everyday lives without even realizing it.  Whether it is voice activated digital assistants, automatic robotic vacuum cleaners, e-commerce or television content suggestions based on past purchases or viewing, or parking assist functionality in a car, all of these products, services, and features are enabled by a degree of artificial intelligence.  And new AI chatbots, which possess the advanced ability to conduct conversations and even compose detailed narratives, such as emails, articles, or other forms of writing, are seeing extensive usage.

While these consumer-focused AI applications are getting much attention, in many ways their benefits are dwarfed by the potential AI has to transform how businesses operate.  For example, machine learning, which is a subset of AI and involves the use of statistical models and algorithms to process vast amounts of data and information, is allowing companies to analyze virtually limitless numbers of “what if” scenarios quickly so that the best course of action can be determined significantly faster than it would be by humans alone.

With this, in areas like mechanical engineering and manufacturing, AI can enable companies to turbo charge innovation cycles.  It allows them to optimize the design and production of new components and products, helping them to perform better while also being lighter and more sustainable.  And perhaps best of all, AI is allowing companies to get those improved products to market in much less time than ever before so they can more rapidly benefit users.TE is not only a trail blazer in the use of AI in our own design and manufacturing processes, but our subject matter experts are also well-versed in how AI is helping our customers to transform their operations and products across a number of industries.  So, they are valuable resources to discuss the topic and to share examples of how this exciting new technology is transforming industries and helping to usher in an entirely new era of productivity, products, and performance.
