TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity and sensors, has extended its range of RJ45 connectors with an ODVA Variant 1 version for use in harsh environments. The ruggedized design of the new connector variant provides the ultimate level of durability for applications that put their components to the test every day.

Customers can choose between two housing options for the ODVA Variant 1 connector. They can select either injection molded, flame-resistant, glass-reinforced PBT or die-cast, nickel-plated zinc. Both are highly resistant to chemicals and UV radiation, and provide IP67-rated resistance to ingress of dust and water.

“Designers can use this new connector to place external ports on equipment installed in locations both outdoors and indoors,” says Jeff Waldman, product manager, industrial communications at TE Connectivity. “Its bayonet locking provides high resistance to dust and water. In fact, it won’t let in water even after being submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of one meter. This means that enclosures used outdoors will maintain their IP rating.”

While indoor applications don’t directly benefit as much from the same security against water and dust, the connectors will withstand rougher treatment during handling. This provides an additional level of durability not normally available for indoor use.

TE expects the ODVA Variant 1 RJ45 connector to be used in such applications as industrial data network systems, automation systems, process control, renewable energy systems, test devices and instruments, and home fiber installations.
