As OEMs add more electrical and electronic content to cars, power loads are increasing, leading to a shift in low voltage architectures. A 48 Volt architecture offers the advantage of delivering the same power as a traditional 12 Volt system but with only a quarter of the current, enabling the use of smaller and lighter wiring which enhances efficiency and reduces overall vehicle weight. TE Connectivity, a world leader in connectors and sensors, is at the forefront of this advancement offering products that are 48V ready to enable a full transition from 12V to 48V architectures.

“OEMs are motivated to address the increasing demand for power, from enhanced performance, self-driving and safety technologies, while finding cost-effective solutions to meeting stricter regulations on C02 emissions,” said Pradeep Moorthy, North American senior manager, product management. ”48 Volt architectures have the potential to generate significant amounts of electrical power that can lead up to a 15% increase in fuel efficiency while also achieving between 25 and 50% more low-end torque.”

The primary requirement of connectors for 48V electrical systems is optimal pin pitch providing sufficient creepage and clearance distances to prevent arcing. Additionally, these connector systems need robust locking mechanisms to prevent accidental disconnection, maintain secure connections, and meet automotive specifications for robustness.

TE Connectivity is collaborating with leading OEMs to develop a specialized portfolio of 48-volt connectors that fulfill both signal and power requirements across a wide range of automotive electrical and electronic applications. In addition to creating new 48V-compatible products, TE is also assessing its existing portfolio to identify solutions that are already suited for 48V applications without modification. This dual approach enables TE to provide reliable, efficient options to meet the evolving needs of the automotive industry as it transitions to higher-voltage systems.
