The automotive industry innovation roadmap is often characterized by the acronym ACES, meaning Automated, Connected, Electrified and Smart. Each area of innovation is driving an increasing number of electronic components within the vehicle. At the same time, automotive manufacturers are under pressure to reduce weight and CO₂ emissions. Component miniaturization is therefore a key enabler of automotive innovation, particularly in relation to connector technology that transports electrical power, signals and data to these new electronic devices. The challenge apart from reduction in connector footprint and packaging space, is to still achieve necessary robustness for harsh automotive environments.
