Sensors for Vital Signs Monitoring
Vital signs are the standard indicators to assess a patient’s health status and detect potential medical problems. Body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure are the four most common vital signs that help determine a patient's status.
With the development of new technologies within the Internet of Things (IoT) in the medical industry, vital signs can now be measured in a medical environment such as a hospital or they can be monitored remotely from the patient’s home. Without proper vital sign monitoring, serious health conditions can go unnoticed, or undetected. Early detection is key to timely interventions which leads to patients receiving the proper care needed. At the center of monitoring and measuring vital sign levels, there are sensors. Sensors continue to provide medical professionals and patients the ability to monitor and track conditions. This is especially relevant today as the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has been influencing the medical industry and shifting it towards remote patient monitoring methods.
Sensors enable the collection of data in various vital sign monitoring applications which changes the way in which patients can be diagnosed and treated. Instead of the traditional one or multiple in person visits to a medical facility, the patient can be monitored by their doctor in real-time and remotely. In some cases, patients could even be treated offsite since their healthcare professionals could monitor and access their vital signs while treatment was being administered. This new flexibility within the medical industry allows for a more convenient and comfortable experience for the patient while also keeping costs down and increasing availability of open rooms for medical facilities. As the IoMT landscape further evolves, we are enabling a healthier future by continuing to develop sensor technologies for medical applications as the healthcare ecosystem becomes more connected.
